De Tafel, Wynberg: A Refined Cape Culinary Journey
We recently had the pleasure of dining at De Tafel during Restaurant Week, indulging in their 5-Course Signature Style Dinner menu. Located at the Palm House Boutique Hotel & Spa, De Tafel offers an intimate dining experience focused on showcasing the richness of indigenous Cape flavors with a contemporary twist
The Setting and First Impressions
Upon arriving, we were initially taken to the main restaurant at Palm House, which serves a different menu. There was a bit of confusion about where our reservation was, but the friendly service quickly made up for it. Once seated at De Tafel, the ambiance set the perfect tone for the evening—a cozy, sophisticated space where you can focus on the dishes and their stories.
A Chef with a Story to Tell
Chef Gregory made the evening even more special by personally explaining the story behind each dish. His dedication to sourcing local ingredients, such as kapokbos and boegoe, paid homage to the rich food culture of the Cape. His passion was evident in the presentation and in how each element of the dishes was thoughtfully prepared.
The 5-Course Experience
Chef’s Favours
The meal began with a selection of appetizers, beautifully presented. Every bite was a delight, making it difficult to choose a favorite as each offering was bursting with flavor.
Sewejaartjie
This dish was accompanied by an incredible story shared by the chef, and you could truly feel the vision behind it. The blend of flavors was both unique and comforting, a true reflection of Cape ingredients.
Elgin Apple Sorbet
A refreshing break in the meal came in the form of a delicious sorbet made from Elgin’s locally sourced apples. Light, tart, and bursting with fresh flavors, it perfectly reset the palate for the main course.

Joostevlakte Duck Breast
Duck can be tricky, and I was a bit hesitant due to a previous bad experience elsewhere. However, this dish was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful. The jus served alongside it was, quite simply, perfection—chef’s kiss.
Bioclimate
The final course was nothing short of divine. The Heuningboegoe creme glacee added a subtle sweetness, and the entire dish was beautifully balanced. I only regret not savoring it more slowly, as it was truly one of the highlights of my entire trip to Cape Town.

Final Thoughts
Dining at De Tafel was a truly memorable experience, one made even more special by the opportunity to attend during Restaurant Week. If it weren’t for the special pricing, we might have missed out on this gem. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic date night, offering an exceptional fusion of flavors and a deep connection to local ingredients. The food was simply outstanding, and the storytelling behind each dish made it all the more special. Don’t get water by the bottle, unless you’re willing to pay a hefty R100 for it.
De Tafel is not just a meal—it’s an experience rooted in the essence of the Cape, and one that will linger in my memory for a long time.
