Dairy-Free Melkkos

Dairy-Free Melkkos

Dairy-Free Melkkos

Dairy-Free Melkkos

Melkkos is the ultimate South African comfort dish: warm, creamy, nostalgic. Traditionally made with milk, butter, and flour, it’s a taste of childhood in every bite. But for those of us who are dairy-sensitive or simply looking for a gentler option, this dairy-free melkkos keeps all the heart and flavour of the original, without the regret.
Swapping out regular milk for Parmalat EasyGest and using plant-based butter, this version is easy on digestion, but still rich, creamy and cinnamon-kissed. Serve it fordessert, or whenever your soul needs soothing — it’s still melkkos, still magical, just more mindful.
Course Dessert

Ingredients

  • 100 g sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 90 g cake flour
  • Salt a pinch
  • 3 tbsp plant butter
  • 1 L Lactose free milk
  • 1 cinnamon stick/1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • Vanilla essence Optional

Instructions

  • Rub together the flour, salt and butter with your fingers until it is nice and crumbly
  • Pour the milk into a large saucepan and add the cinnamon stick. Bring to the boil. Once the milk is boiling and frothy, reduce the heat and allow to simmer while slowly sprinkling the crumbs into the milk, whisking.
  • Reduce the heat and simmer gently, while whisking continually, for about 10 minutes. Turn off the heat, allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving with a generous sprinkling of cinnamon sugar
