Chocolate Melkkos
Melkkos is one of South Africa’s most nostalgic comfort foods – a creamy, warm milk-based dish usually topped with cinnamon sugar. But this chocolate melkkos recipe takes it to the next level with rich cocoa flavor and velvety smoothness. It’s the perfect winter warmer or late-night treat when you’re craving something both homely and indulgent.
- 100 g sugar
- 1 ½ tsp cocoa
- 90 g cake flour
- Salt a pinch
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1 L milk
- 1 tsp cocoa or more for extra taste
- Vanilla essence Optional
- Chocolate grated or shavings
Mix the sugar and cocoa together and set aside
Rub together the flour, salt and butter with your fingers until it is nice and crumbly
Pour the milk into a large saucepan and add the cocoa. Bring to the boil. Once the milk is boiling and frothy, reduce the heat and allow to simmer while slowly sprinkling the crumbs into the milk, whisking.
Reduce the heat and simmer gently, while whisking continually, for about 10 minutes. Turn off the heat, allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving with a generous sprinkling of cocoa sugar and chocolate
