Braaibroodjie Swirl Buns
Braaibroodjie Swirl Buns bring a proudly South African braai classic into a new form — golden baked buns filled with tomato, cheese, and chutney. Part of my Buns of Heritage series, these savoury swirls celebrate Heritage Month by turning local favourites into soft, flavour-packed rolls. Perfect as a side dish for Braai Day or as a fun snack with friends and family.
- 1 bag of store-bought bread dough
- 1 onion thinly sliced
- 1 tomato thinly sliced
- 2 l cheddar cheese grated
- 3-4 tbsp chutney
- salt and freshly ground black pepper
Preheat the oven to 180 °C and lightly grease a baking dish.
Roll out the store-bought bread dough on a floured surface.
Arrange the onion and tomato slices evenly over the pastry.
Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle the grated cheese on top.
Roll the pastry up tightly – starting with the side furthest from you.
Cut the roll into slices about 3 to 4 cm thick, as you would cut cinnamon rolls.
Place the slices in the prepared baking dish, open side up.
Spread a thin layer of chutney over each roll.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
Serve hot with braai meat.
Spread cutney before arranging the cheese, onion and tomato.
After baking you can "toast" on the braai for the extra "braaibroodjie" effect
