
Butter Chicken Bao Buns
These Butter Chicken Bao Buns are a bold fusion of South Asian flavour and Asian street food vibes. Using store-bought buns and leftover chicken, it’s a quick, crowd-pleasing dish perfect for finger food spreads, casual meals, or styled food photography.
Ingredients
For the Chicken Filling:
- 2 cups cooked shredded chicken (rotisserie or poached)
- 2 tsp butter
- 2 tsp garam masala
- ½ tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp garlic & ginger paste
- ¼ cup tomato purée or Passata
- ⅓ cup cream or coconut cream
- Salt & sugar to taste
- Optional: chopped coriander
For Assembly:
- Store-bought bao buns steamed as per package
- Sliced cucumber or pickled onions
- Coriander or microgreens
- Yoghurt drizzle optional
Instructions
- In a pan, melt butter. Add garlic & ginger, then spices. Toast gently, then add tomato purée and cook 2–3 min. Add cream and bring to a simmer. Stir in shredded chicken and cook until coated and heated through. Adjust seasoning with salt and sugar.
- Fill each bao bun with a spoonful of butter chicken, top with cucumber or pickled onion, fresh herbs, and a drizzle of yoghurt if desired.
